What is Podiatry?
|

|
Podiatrists are Doctors of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) Like any other physician, a Podiatrist must obtain an undergraduate
college degree, then attend a 4 year Podiatric Medical School, followed by a post graduate residency program. In New
York State, Podiatrists are licensed to practice all medical and surgical procedures required to treat any problem which affects
the foot.
People will sometimes ask, "Do you treat that?!!" Our answer is always the same, "If you have a foot problem,
you should see a foot specialist." Whether the problem is a skin rash, a "pulled muscle," an injury, laceration, sprain,
fracture or any other "pain in the foot", a Podiatrist is the most qualified specialist to
treat the problem.

Here is a list of just some of the things that Podiatrists
treat:
Heel and Arch Pain: Heel pain can range from a mild soreness
when rising in the morning, to acute, excruciating pain which lasts all day and worsens with activity. Many things can
cause heel pain, including a heel "spur", plantar fasciitis, muscle strains, posterior tibialis tendon dysfunction, certain
types of arthritis, and even fractures and infections. Proper evaluation of heel pain can include X Rays, diagnostic
ultrasonography, blood tests, bone scans, or MRIs, as well as a thorough physical axamination. Heel
pain shoould not be ignored!!! If you suffer with any type of heel pain, please call and make an
appointment with the Doctor.

Fungus Toenails: A fungal infection in a toenail can cause the
nail to grow thick, brittle, and discolored. Although sometimes cosmetic, these nails can frequently
become painful or ingrown, making it very difficult to wear shoes comfortably. Proper diagnosis includes the need
for a physical examination, and often, a laboratory culture. There are many treatment options, including topical medications
(a new one even looks like red nail polish!), oral medications, palliative treatments, and non traditiional "holistic"
remedies. Dr. Smith can help determine the cause of a nail disease, and work with you to determine the most favorable
and effective treatment plan for you.

Running and Sports injuries:
The health benefits of athletic participation are clear and undisputable, but with any sport, pains, strains, and injury
are always a risk. High impact sports, such as football, hockey, aerobic dance, and kickboxing, can lead to bruises,
fractures, and sprains. Endurance activities, like marathons, triathalons and biking, are prone to stress fractures,
tendonitis, and nerve problems. Of course, all athletes are vulnerable to "over use" injuries, especially when practicing
6-7 days a week, and when there is too much emphasis on sport specific skills and not enough time dedicated to stretching,
conditioning, and recovery. This has, unfortunately, become more common in pediatric athletes, who are frequently coached
by well meaning, yet under trained coaches/parents. Some conditions are OK to "play through", while others require treatments
that may include rest, in addition to other modalities. A qualified Podiatrist can diagnose these sport related ailments,
and help determine the best, safest course of treatment for both quick return to activity and long term safety function.

Ingrown Toenails: Ingrown
toenails can range from mild, slightly red, and only uncomfortable in dressy shoes, to severely infected, constantly
painful, and potentially limb threatening. A Podiatrist can remove some ingrown toenails easily and painlessly,
while others may require first anesthetizing the affected toe with a local anesthetic (like Novacaine). Chronic
ingrown toenails, which keep coming back even after they have been properly treated, can be corrected permanently, thus ending
what, in many cases, had been a lifelong problem. A good Podiatrist can determine the best course of treatment for any
ingrown nail, and most patients enjoy immediate relies from pain.

Flat Feet: Some
feet look flat, but actually work quite normally, while others appear to have "normal" arches, but actually function quite
poorly. Feet and arches need to be evaluated both statically (sitting in an exam chair), and dynamically (walking).
True "flat feet" are diagnosed based on the relationships of the foot and leg bones to each other, as well as the quantity
and quality of motion (pronation, supination, dorsiflexion, and plantarflexion) observed at the rearfoot and midfoot joints
while walking. Flat feet can lead to many foot problems, like heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, and osteoarthritis,
and can also cause problems in other areas of the body, like the knees, hips, or back. Fortunately, most flat feet can
be managed with custom fitted orthotics (shoe inserts), which are carefully molded, posted, and adjusted for every patient.
With years of training and experience in biomechanical evaluation and foot function, a Podiatrist is the most
qualified professional to see for custom -made, functional foot orthoses.

Trauma, Sprains, and Strains: Dr. Smith treats all types of
trauma to the feet. From minor injuries like blisters, splinters and foreign bodies, and bleeding under the nails,
to more serious injuries such as sprains and strains of the feet and ankles, fractures of the bones, and open wounds
requiring stitches, emergencies are generally seen right away, usually with less waiting time and more expertise than the
local emergency room. Dr. Smith's trauma room is equipped with X-Rays, diagnostic ultrasound equipment, suture
equipment, casting supplies, and "state-of-the-art" braces and splints for any type of trauma.
